They’re colorful and can be used to add some bling to a backpack, purse or keys.
Live Love Lanyards is a local business started by cousins Lily, 12, and Ella, 13, of Port Jefferson Station and Mount Sinai. “We make lanyards and key chains and then we started making other stuff, like wristlets and bookmarks,” Ella said.
Their goal is to save up for a trip to Disney.
Sisters Jamie Adamski, the mom of Lily, and Leia Woodruff, the mom of Ella, both work within the same school district and wanted similar lanyards that they were seeing on social media. But first, they thought, they should ask their daughters, who were crafty because of their involvement with the Girl Scouts and church, if they could make it for them.
“We showed them the pictures and asked them if they could figure out how to make it,” Woodruff said. “They watched some YouTube videos and told us what to order. We got the supplies and they just kept making them. Then they decided they wanted key chains to hang on their backup and other people started asking them if they could figure out how to make a wristlet, how to make a bookmark…”
The cousins sell their creations through social media and craft fairs, and they’ve been getting lots of business, with an estimated 50 order per month. They work on making their lanyards, bookmarks, wristlets and keychains two days a week.
“We started really small and then we realized we needed to get more supplies,” Woodruff said. “The girls have been involved with everything from inventory to what we order. They name all the items that they have. They’re all handmade by them. They pick their colors for everything.”
Lily said that through this process she’s learned organizational skills and Ella said she learned about business as she keeps track of sales and deliveries.
